Mercedes-Benz sold this high-performance version of the W124 from 1991 to 1994 – the Mercedes-Benz 500E / E500. It was developed in close cooperation with Porsche. Mercedes-Benz commissioned Porsche to redesign the W124 chassis in order to fit the 322 bhp 5.0L V8 motor that was used in 500SL, along with all the necessary changes on the suspension system and drive train. When the car was ready, it was found that its widened fenders didn’t fit through the W124 assembly line in Sindelfingen in three places, hence Porsche was also commissioned to assemble the vehicle.

During production Mercedes-Benz delivered parts to Porsche’s “Reutter-Bau” plant in Zuffenhausen (an urban district of Stuttgart) where the W124 chassis were hand-assembled. When finished the chassis were transported by truck to the Mercedes-Benz assembly plant in Sindelfingen to be painted. As soon as the paint was dry the varnished chassis were then shipped back to Porsche’s “Rössle-Bau” in Zuffenhausen where the engine was put in and the car was completed. For final inspection and delivery the vehicles again were transported to Sindelfingen. This process took a full 18 days. The internal nomenclature from Porsche is known as Type 2758 for this collaborative project.

Only 500 units of E500 Limited were ever produced.  Recaro seat inserts and door panals were special designed for this Limited model and the exterior was complemented with 17-inch Evo II six-spoke polished wheels. It is fully optioned with sunblinds, climate control, heated seats and memory seats.  It also had the black “Mercedes-Benz” lettering on the engine cover rather than white painted lettering that usually flaked off. Mercedes-Benz stamped stainless steel doorsill protectors are also standard on this Limited model.
